What is an Esthetician?
An esthetician is a state-licensed skin care professional who has been trained through a formal esthetics program to perform treatments that promote the health and beauty of the skin. The treatments help alleviate non-medical skincare concerns and implement preventative practices to slow the signs of aging. These non-invasive treatments are applied to the epidermal layer of the skin. Estheticians also educate clients on cleansing, diet, and the application of skin-care products at home.
An esthetician’s work involves using creams, lotions, masks, serums, and wraps. Many of these are made with antioxidants, botanicals, essential oils, and infused scents that provide a sensory experience for the client that encourages relaxation and rejuvenation. Estheticians also use mechanical or electronic devices such as microdermabrasion machines, brushing machines, electric pulverizers, atomizers, and galvanic current to achieve desired results.
Though not an all inclusive list, the following are some of the services provided by estheticians.
- Microdermabrasion
- Chemical peels
- Laser resurfacing
- Laser skin rejuvenation

Estheticians are trained in skin wellness. Their therapies are designed to improve the tone, texture, color, and youthfulness of the skin of the face, neck, and other parts of the body. Many people seek out an esthetician to fight lines, wrinkles, dry skin, eczema, or even acne. Some clients make an appointment with an esthetician to obtain that rejuvenated or refreshed feeling. No matter the reason for a visit, the esthetician will analyze your skin issues or concerns and help you maintain your skin’s health and vitality.
