What are the Risks and Complications of Plastic Surgery?

First and foremost, plastic surgery is extremely safe. Of all the surgeries out there, this is one that's very controlled. We take measures early on to control the factors before going to the operating room to make sure it's as safe as possible for you.

With every operation, there's always risks like infection, bleeding, fluid collection, etc. that exist no matter what type of surgery you're having. The specific ones will fall in line more with what kind of operation you're undergoing. If it's breast surgery, there are specific complications that may be related to sensation. If it's liposuction, there are risks related to whether or not you're having contour irregularities after. The bottom line is that plastic surgery in and of itself is extremely safe.

I think it's important that you have a conversation with your plastic surgeon about the risks that each individual surgery has, and make sure that you feel comfortable with accepting and understanding what that means. Also, take the time to ask questions about your specific surgery.

The Three R's of Plastic Surgery

I had this wonderful consultation with a patient one time, and we were talking about what plastic surgery means. I came up with this idea called the three R's of plastic surgery.

There's a reconstructive side of plastic surgery and that is the accident or the cancer. That's something I did a lot of in the military, putting people back together or helping them get through a reconstructive process with their cancer.

On the other side of this pendulum is recreation. That's a delicate place to be. Recreation is when somebody has an idea that whatever they have needs to be fully recreated. I take that side of the pendulum with pause because we are each individually unique and to recreate something is something we really have to think about.

More often what we discuss in our office and where we really enjoy helping people is this middle R, and that's restoration. Whether you're a mom of four and you have raised these kids and they have wreaked havoc on your body, because that's what pregnancy does in age, time and gravity. We want to be a part of that restoration. That's the fun part. It's the part where we get to restore that feeling you had before several years in life happened. There's nothing wrong with life happening, but to be a part of restoring someone and getting them back to that place, that's a real sweet spot in plastic surgery.

There's a place for reconstruction and there are times when we have to recreate things.

What Does A Consultation Look Like?

For plastic surgery consultations, we want you to know that we realize it's a commitment of your time and we want to honor that.

At Webb Plastic Surgery, what we really try and do is take that plastic surgery consultation all the way through and answer all of your questions. You're going have a period of time where we will gather information from you - typical things, medical history, medications, and then we'll have a significant amount of time dedicated to you and me just having a conversation, understanding your goals, understanding the risks of surgery, understanding your options.

Then, typically what we'll do is move into a phase where we do an exam. We often do pictures so that we have a moment in time where we can look at where you are. Then, answer those questions that may come up after the exam and the pictures. Then ultimately, if you elect to undergo surgery, we have a cost estimate for you, an idea of a schedule, and really make the entire consult comprehensive, so that you feel as though you've got all the information you need to make a good decision about your care moving forward.

Can Plastic Surgery Help Me With My Problem?

A lot of people have come to the office and the real question is can plastic surgery as a whole help me with my specific problem. I think the important part is what your specific goals are. Everybody has different goals and everybody has a different body structure and how their body is going to respond to surgery or be ready for surgery. That is an important conversation to have with your plastic surgeon. I think it's always great to get some information, garner some knowledge on Google or do your own research, but then bring those questions to your plastic surgeon.

You may be in a scenario where you think you need a breast augmentation, but you really need a lift. Or you really need a lift and an augmentation to meet the goals that are inside your mind and your ideas for your endpoint. A lot of that gets teased out. We get consults for certain things, but at the end of the day, we may be guiding the patient or realizing that the patient's goals are guiding them down a different path to help them feel restored, rejuvenated, and have the best outcomes with their plastic surgery.

So although this is such a broad topic, the important thing is to come with the goals that you have in mind, and we like to take the approach in our office that it isn't a cookie cutter thing. It is really how can we best meet your goals for your restoration, for your plastic surgery, and to help you feel better.

Q: How Many Years of Experience Does Dr. Webb Have?

A: Dr. Webb graduated from medical school in 2006. Since then he has spent countless hours in the operating room and has learned from some of the best surgeons in the U.S., including the specialists at the Mayo Clinic. He has been a practicing General and Trauma Surgeon since 2011 with the Air Force; completed his plastic surgery training in 2017; and officially started his practice, Webb Plastic Surgery, in 2020.

Will My Insurance Cover My Plastic Surgery?

A lot of whether or not your insurance will cover plastic surgery is very dependent on what we're talking about. For the most part, aesthetic plastic surgery is not a covered option. The more common things that are covered are skin cancer or a suspicious lesion or something like a breast reduction.

Realistically, the best thing you can do is come into the office, meet us and have that consultation, and we can help guide whether or not this is something that will be covered.

Through that consultation, we take your story, we build that story, your physical exam, and often photos, then we can present that to your insurance to see if it's something they'll cover.

Sadly, a lot of this is out of our hands and we don't have a perfect algorithm as to whether or not something will be covered. But, your best shot is to come in and meet with us. Even if things aren't covered, we're more than happy to talk to you about how to reach those goals, and how we can be a part of that care.

How Much Does Plastic Surgery Cost?

A very common question we get is how much does plastic surgery cost? Obviously, that's a moving target. It has to do with what surgery we're doing and how expansive that surgery is and how much time it takes. Here's a simple breakdown.

Typically, when we're talking about plastic surgery, it's a surgeon fee, there's an anesthesia fee, and there's a facility fee. Beneath that may be things that are required like implant costs and instrument fees, etc. Realize that entire cost is all encompassing for your surgery. In our office, that typically will involve at least six months of post operative care, and that is included in those fees. Some plastic surgery costs are nominal and some could be a few hundred dollars to a few thousand dollars on some higher ticket items.

But again, that has everything to do with where you're headed and what your goals are.

I think the other thing to realize is that if the deal may seem too good to be true, that's where it really is worth your time digging in, finding out more about the office, more about the surgeon, and more about where they perform these operations so that you feel comfortable and safe in trusting the surgeon and their team to get you to your goals.

Q: Why can't I get a quote for a procedure over the phone?

A: Every person is unique and we want to give you the special attention you deserve. While many procedures are similar, there could be circumstances that make your procedure different than other patients we have worked with. We would not want to mislead you in any way, so having a personal consultation is the best way to provide you with an accurate cost for your specific procedure.

Will I Have Visible Scars?

Sadly, we have not figured out how to do a scarless surgery. That being said, I think one of the delicacies of plastic surgery is that most of us pride ourselves on an appreciation for the tissue in a way that we can bring things together to give you the most aesthetic scars.

Take for example a breast reduction or a breast lift. You're going to trade that weight for those scars. You're going to trade the droop of a breast for scars. Some of them heal really well, some of this is entirely dependent on your genetic code. We do know that some people tend to scar a little heavier or some people tend to scar a little lighter.

At the end of the day, we will do everything we can, from a surgical standpoint, to provide you with the most aesthetic scar. Then, there's some things we can do afterwards that we counsel people on in the postoperative phase, whether that's sunscreen, lotions, or massage, that can really help you get to your maximum benefit with scars.

We try and hide scars the best way that we can so that you can walk around feeling like you are in your own skin and this isn't something people are looking at. We can't do scarless surgery, but we certainly are going to make it as positive an experience for you as we possibly can.

How Long Will My Results Last?

This has everything to do with what operation you had.

There's a few things out there that we just can't stop. We can't stop time and we can't stop gravity. As time progresses, our skin elasticity decreases, gravity has its effect, whether it's on our face, and we have natural aging processes where our skin gets relaxed. We have less fat content in our face, we have descent of tissue.

So the reality of it is that plastic surgery well done can last you a significant amount of time. Let's say ten years. If you get a face lift, your facelift will last you the rest of your life, but the idea is that it sets the clock back ten years and then you move forward from there.

So realize that even though you had your eyes done when you were forty, you might need your eyes done when you're seventy if gravity, time, and the elasticity of your skin has resulted in that need later down the road. Again, each one of these is very patient specific. Some people have skin or tissue that's more resistant to aging. For the most part, plastic surgery lasts a good long while this is an investment in yourself. I think that you can know moving forward, you're going to have a lot of joy or a lot of satisfaction with that result for a significant amount of time.

Q: Do you have a consultation fee?

A: Yes, we have a consultation fee and it will be collected over the phone when your appointment is scheduled. This fee is non-refundable and can be applied towards your quoted surgical procedure surgeon's fees if you choose to book on the day of your consultation. Our self-pay fee for a medically necessary consultation is $200. If you are being represented by an attorney and need a consultation for a lawsuit, we will require a payment from your attorney prior to scheduling your appointment.

Can I Get Multiple Surgeries At Once?

We live in a world where people love to be efficient. They love to get a bunch of things done all at once. A question that we'll get a lot of times is: can I undergo multiple plastic surgeries all at once? The answer is yes, but we need to figure out exactly what we're headed toward.

Some plastic surgery combinations really work well together. For example, in a Mommy Makeover where breast work is being done, either a lift or an augmentation, we can also do abdominal work. Understand that both of those operations are on the front of your body and they're in reasonable proximity to each other so they can be done well together.

The other big factor is time. This goes back to safety. If you come to our office, you'll realize that from the front desk to the consultation, your safety is paramount to us.

Most plastic surgery elective cases should cap out around six hours. This is a matter of anesthesia time, fluid shifts, and again, back to a safety profile. What I like to do is counsel people that the length of surgery will also depend on what we can do in a combination and if we are going to supersede six hours, then we may have to stage these operations.

Lastly, I think it's a matter of location. If you are doing an operation on your arms and legs and you then need to use your arms and legs to get around, you've put yourself in a position where healing can be a challenge. This is a good conversation to have with your plastic surgeon, but realize that if you can't combine everything at once, it's not a matter of wanting to prolong your goals. It's a matter of really giving you the best shot at outcomes and predictable expectations that we can fulfill.

Is It Safe to Travel to Get Plastic Surgery?

We see people from out of town and a lot of the things that we do on the front end, we leverage our electronic age where we can do video, HIPAA compliant consultations, pictures, things like that, that garner preoperative clearance before meeting the patient.

A patient can then arrive but we will have to have some of that time where we lay hands on people, do photos and measurements so that we can make sure that we're all on the same page. Then once that surgery is done, there's a period of recovery where you need to plan to be in the local area for the safest possible outcomes.

A lot of times we'll see you the next day or twenty-four to forty-eight hours later and then we'll see you a week later, answer all those other questions and we'll be able to cut you loose. I think then we can talk about how follow ups go beyond that. Some of them are simple Q and A's that we can do over those HIPAA compliant applications or you can come on back and we always love to see you.

I think one of the concerns is “Is it safe to travel outside of the United States?” Where we are down in the southwest, people like to travel to Central America. I think the challenge is that we don't really have oversight on how things are done there. The standard of care is not as clearly defined. Sadly, we do see patients who have gotten care elsewhere and they're either unhappy with it or it's left them with results that are not where they'd like to be. The challenge there is kind of going backwards trying to redo what's already been done. A lot of times we can "do" in plastic surgery, but it's very difficult to "undo."

I think I would be leery of saying that, just because it's cheaper somewhere, I'm going to travel there. Again, this has everything to do with your confidence in the office, your confidence in the surgeon, their training, and the reliability of that follow-up that comes thereafter. Although it is not a super common thing that we see, we're more than happy to see people from out of town. We feel honored that patients would come as far as they have to see us - we've had people even from Boston in the East Coast that trust us knowing that we're going to take care of them and be part of their care from beginning to end.

How Can I Prepare for Plastic Surgery?

Realistically, have a good consultation. Get as much information as you can. Garner that on your own, but take the time to meet with the plastic surgeon, and we are more than happy to answer all those questions. Dispel rumors, dispel myths, help you understand all the data and information you've gotten. Have that conversation.

Then when it comes to personal readiness, I think it's just a matter of being as healthy as you possibly can be. If you're in a pursuit to lose weight, try to get to that goal weight before we start making incisions that will have a lasting effect. If you are battling some medical problems, try to get to that maximized point and have that conversation with me or your plastic surgeon - is this safe to proceed? Realistically, the preparing portion of this journey that you're on has to do everything with specifically what's going on in your life, what your goals are, and how safe we can make your surgery.

Are There Any Lifestyle Changes Needed Before Plastic Surgery?

I think that has to do everything with just being as healthy as you can be. This is the sort of thing where if you're on that journey to lose weight, lose as much as you can in a safe and healthy way. If you are battling some medical issues, get those squared away.

Those are the things to do before surgery, and lifestyle changes after surgery are an investment. This is an investment in yourself. Once plastic surgery has happened, take the opportunity to cultivate that and keep that, whether that's changing up an eating habit or an exercise regimen. Enjoy it. A lot of people undergo these operations and then they feel like they can do those things.

Although there is a little bit of setup on the front end of what you can do to best be prepared. There's also some lifestyle changes on the back end that can give you longevity to your results. What is the difference between cosmetic and reconstructive surgery?

Cosmetic surgery involves reshaping the normal structures of the body to improve one’s appearance and self-esteem. This is usually an elective surgery, so it is rarely covered by health insurance. Reconstructive surgery is conducted on abnormal structures of the body that may be associated with trauma, congenital defects, developmental abnormalities, disease, etc. The focus of reconstructive surgery is more oriented toward improving function, but may also be conducted for approximating normal appearance. Most health insurance policies cover reconstructive surgery, although specifics between procedures and levels of coverage may vary.

Plastic Surgery Myths

There are plenty of common myths and misconceptions about plastic surgery, and I think a lot of it is just propagated by what we see and what's driven into us. And the reality of it is that probably the biggest myth of plastic surgery is that it's "gonna fix me." Realistically, nobody needs fixing. People have goals and people have desires to reach those goals, and we are more than happy to help them on that journey.

The other myth is that plastic surgery is perfect or somehow I'm going to have a perfect shape and this has everything to do with your body structure, which is not somebody else's body structure. That's a big myth that somehow plastic surgery is perfect and symmetry is going to be perfect. What's interesting is most people don't even realize that our bodies are naturally imperfect. They are naturally asymmetric. Sometimes that is pleasing to the eye and perfect symmetry on a human body can be almost an unsettling thing.

I think the myth is that the goal is for perfection or the goal is for, you know, a specific look. The reality of it is that the goal is for restoring you to the best possible place. That's going to be unique and individual for each person and it's part of that consultation that happens in our office when you and I talk. The idea that plastic surgery is somehow magical, that the sutures are magical or that the operations are magical really isn't true. It's a matter of tailoring our operations, tailoring our goals to you specifically, and having us be a part of that process in helping you get there.

Is There An Age Limit to Plastic Surgery?

A lot of times we get asked if there's an age limit, "am I either too young or too old for plastic surgery?" Let me focus a little bit on the too young. I think most plastic surgeons would agree that there's a period of time where development is continuing to progress and aesthetic surgery before that point sets people up for unpredictable results. If you are at the point of maturation, then we can easily help guide what we can expect by way of results so that you don't have growth impacting the surgery over time.

Again, with anybody, medical background/problems are going to be part of everybody's surgery and that's irrespective of age. So that kind of alludes to the older population, which may be people asking "am I too old for plastic surgery?" The reality of it is is how healthy are you? This goes back to the fact that we do everything upfront to make this the safest process for you. We have people who undergo, for example, a facelift when they're seventy-five years old. Of course, we do our due diligence to make sure it is safe for them; discussing it with their primary care doctor, cardiologist, anesthesiologist, so that we can provide the best care. That operation is also more directed toward that patient population.

So realistically, there are times when age is going to be a factor. If it's unsafe for you at the older end of the spectrum, then it's maybe not a good idea. If you're not quite at maturation point in the younger end of the spectrum, then that's another judgment call to say let's hold off for a while. For the most part, plastic surgery is very fluid and has everything to do with how safe it is for you as a patient.

How do I know what size breast implant is right for me?

The patient's personal desires are a factor, but the reasons for surgery and considerations about overall health are important as well. For example, if someone is unhappy with the size and firmness of their breasts following pregnancy or major weight loss, or there is unevenness between the breasts that want to be addressed. Talking to the cosmetic surgeon and getting expert advice can help you make the right decision during your pre-surgical appointment(s).

Is It Safe to Get Plastic Surgery?

Surgery itself has inherent risks, but plastic surgery is very safe. A big part of that has to do with the fact that a lot of plastic surgery is elective. Therefore, we have the opportunity to get studies done early, to get tests, to get preoperative clearance by cardiologists or primary care doctors, to stop medications or start medications so that we can set you up for basically the most medically maximized state to go off into the operating room.

It also gives us the opportunity to dialogue with our anesthesia colleagues about your care so that we can set it up so that your anesthesia is even tailored for you. Plastic surgery in the scope of all different surgeries is very safe because we have that flex. We have that ability to set it up as the safest process for your care.

Post Operative Pain Management

Surgery itself can be uncomfortable, so postoperative pain management is something we can talk about. Usually, this is a very multidisciplinary thing. Sometimes even compression and compression garments give people post-operative comfort. More often than not, there is a short period of time where pain medications will be required. Whether those are non-narcotic or narcotic, we're going to manage those with each individual based on their tolerances.

No one heals better in pain. We want you to be comfortable, but we also want to be smart about it. I also feel like some people get caught up in “I'm going to be in so much discomfort." Realistically, a lot of the soft tissue surgeries that happen in plastic surgery are not that uncomfortable. There is some incisional pain and there is a period of time where there's some soreness but it's something that's very manageable.

More often than not, we'll do a day surgery, send someone home, and they'll walk into the office the next day. I want you to feel confident that the postoperative course is something that you'll be able to make it through. You'll be able to comfortably get through, and that giving your body a chance to heal will be probably the most important part of your post operative care.

How Long is the Recovery Period?

There's not a perfect answer for this, it's going to change with each patient, but realistically you want to give yourself and your body time to heal. A lot of times we tell people six weeks is a good amount of time to expect your wound healing process to take. What we do know is that pretty consistently collagen deposition occurs and you're watertight at two weeks. Really around six weeks you're at the point where you can start stressing those incisions, those scars, getting back into the gym, doing things that are more active.

Again, each one of these operations is going to have its own recovery, but for the most part, plan to take a period of time after your surgery to just rest and relax. Each person's going to be a little bit different on how they respond and whether or not they can get back to simple things like going for a walk or going to work depending on your occupation. Then just realize that for some of the bigger activities, it's going to be around six weeks. Again, this is the sort of thing that we can have a conversation about in the office through your consultation and really dial down what to expect.
