Plastic and Cosmetic Surgeons Are NOT the Same!

One of the most common misconceptions in plastic surgery is the fact that both a plastic surgeon and a cosmetic surgeon are essentially the same. This could not be further from the truth. While they do practice related medical specialties, a board-certified plastic surgeon has a different training than a board-certified cosmetic surgeon. It’s important if you are considering any type of plastic surgery to know your surgeon and his/her qualifications to help you achieve your goals. Let’s debunk this common myth and learn the truth regarding the difference between a plastic and cosmetic surgeon!

Plastic Surgeon

A board-certified plastic surgeon has to complete four years of medical school. Once medical school has been completed, the plastic surgeon then goes on to complete five to six years of medical residency with training in both general surgery and plastic surgery including surgery for cosmetic reasons. After residency, the plastic surgeon must pass the certification exam from the American Board of Plastic Surgery. Only a surgeon who has met the strenuous guidelines established by the American Board of Plastic Surgery can legitimately refer to himself/herself as a board-certified plastic surgeon.

Cosmetic Surgeon

A board-certified cosmetic surgeon has to complete fours years of medical school. After medical school is completed, the cosmetic surgeon then completes four to six years of medical residency in one of the following specialties: general surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, oral and maxillofacial surgery, otolaryngology (ear, nose, and throat), plastic surgery, dermatology, or ophthalmology. After completing residency in one of those areas, the cosmetic surgeon completes a one to two year cosmetic surgery training program. After the training is complete, the cosmetic surgeon must pass the certification exam from the American Board of Cosmetic Surgery.

So What’s the Big Deal?

A plastic surgeon specializes in plastic surgery only. A plastic surgeon can also be called a cosmetic surgeon, however, a cosmetic surgeon might not be able to be called a plastic surgeon. It all comes down to the surgeon’s training. The training that a plastic surgeon does includes both reconstructive and cosmetic procedures. The training a cosmetic surgeon completed may or may not have specialized in plastic surgery but in another specialty. Where this becomes an important factor is if something were to go wrong during surgery, that surgeon does not have a complete background in reconstruction, which is essential if complications arise.

What to Look for in Your Surgeon

All of this can be very confusing when choosing a surgeon for your particular situation. Here’s some things to look for when choosing your surgeon. Find out if he/she has board certification. Check to see if their specialty area is plastic surgery or cosmetic surgery. Find out if the surgeon has experience performing the procedure you want. Be proactive and ask how many times they have performed it in the last year. Also ask about complications the surgeon has encountered and what was done to correct any of them. Be sure to ask about the high quality of care at the hospital or surgical center where the surgeon performs surgery. Finding out if the surgeon has high patient satisfaction can help give peace of mind and a look at what your experience might be like with that surgeon.
